Motivational Interviewing & Tools for Enabling Communication Partners
Deborah von Hapsburg, PhD
February 25, 2012 8:00am - 9:30am
Session Abstract
The purpose of the following presentation is to provide an overview of the work being done at the Ida Institute to promote a better understanding of the human dynamics of hearing loss. This presentation will highlight a variety of tools that will assist audiologists in improving communication with clients who present challenges to daily practice. As part of this talk, the principles of Motivational Interviewing and behavior change will be introduced as the theoretical backdrop for the Tools to be presented. The tools: the Line, the Box, and the Circle will be introduced, highlighted, and demonstrated. Additionally, video ethnographies of audiologists engaging patients in typical scenarios will be used to reflect on current practice in audiology, and to highlight cases in which use of the tools may have improved the outcome of the interaction between the clinician and the client. Participants will be engaged throughout the presentation as we examine these video ethnographies in the context of structured Mirror Exercises. In summary, this presentation will use video ethnographies of patients and audiologists to examine current practice, and to introduce new tools that audiologist can easily use to improve patient-clinician interactions.
